Freelance Video Editor
(Brand & Rural Content – Ongoing Work)
We’re Play Creative—a small (two of us), busy photo + video team based in NZ. We specialise in brand content, with a strong focus on rural and farming clients, and right now… we’re flat out.
So we’re looking for a freelance video editor/s to work alongside us on an ongoing basis.
We work directly with our clients and care a lot about what we put out—natural, authentic, story-driven work that actually feels like the people and brands we’re filming. Every video is totally bespoke and unique, focussing on quality storytelling. We're looking for an editor who shares those values, and cares deeply about getting the best possible end result for the client.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced editor who can take footage (including interview style audio), & a clear brief and turn it into a finished, polished edit. This role isn't going to suit everyone, as we're looking for someone who knows their stuff, and is super confident creating great work, that's ready to deliver to clients.
That might include:
- Brand and story style videos
- Short-form social edits
- Organic testimonials
We’ll give you:
- A solid brief
- References
- Direction on feel, pacing, and priorities
From there, we want you to own the edit—while still collaborating with us on refinements.
Experience & Confidence (Important)
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in brand/commercial editing
- Confident in their ability and decision-making
- Able to hit the ground running without needing hand-holding
- Comfortable taking a brief and turning it into a completed video
We’re a small team and things move quickly, so this role suits someone who’s ready to get stuck in straight away and take ownership of their work.
Our Style
Most of our work sits in this space:
- Natural, not over-processed - often shooting 'run and gun' style while thing are actually occurring, rather than setting shots up
- Real people, real moments, real interview audio
- Organic, cinematic feel
- Often outdoors, often rural
You’ll Be a Great Fit If You:
- Care about story, pacing, and feel (not just making things look “cool”)
- Can take direction and translate a brief into something that feels right
- Are reliable and easy to communicate with
- Enjoy working with a small, down-to-earth team
Bonus Points If You:
- Have worked on rural/agri content
- Have a good eye for natural colour grading
- Can keep things feeling authentic and grounded in story (we've mentioned that enough now, you probably get the idea...)
How We Work
We’re pretty down-to-earth:
- No corporate layers
- No micromanaging
- Just clear briefs, honest feedback, and good communication
BUT - we're fussy. Having grown our own business from the ground up over the past 10 years, we've held ourselves to a high standard of work, and we're looking for someone who gets that, and is as picky and particular about their work quality as we are.
We’ll start with a couple of casual projects to make sure it’s a good fit both ways, then ideally build an ongoing working relationship.
To Apply
Send us:
1. A bit about you
2. 2–3 examples of relevant edited work (brand/documentary/commercial preferred)
3. Why you think you'd be a great fit for this role, and why the role suits you and your current work situation
4. Please also include your hourly freelance editing rate expectations in your application.
And include the word “RURAL” somewhere in your application so we know you’ve read this.
